Energy and global warming are certainly important problems, along with our global economic situation. Your research staff can take a subject and devote extensive research into every facet of its ramifications and spread the information to a wide audience. Actually, these problems are secondary when compared to the gravest threat the world has ever faced, and that subject is left unspoken, even ignored.
Of course, you would not want to upset anyone, or make people panicky, but don't you think it is about time to turn your awesome research capabilities to a situation threatening everyone on the planet, and growing almost daily. Yes, I can hear you saying that it is not headline news, that information is already out there for anyone to find. You may even admit that it has been on the back burner for a long time, and likely to stay there.
Our biggest danger is nuclear proliferation and it feeds on itself; there is a progression that makes it inevitable. It is not difficult to see. Every new advance in technology improves the destructive capability of weapons that forces other nations to counter as a new threat, all in the name of defense. Here is an example. The Chinese figured out how to destroy one of their own defunct satellites making it possible to do the same to other satellites. The U S is mute on the subject, but has also done the same thing. One of Russia's generals recently stated that they are forced to acquire that capability for their own defense. Will the next war start in space?
Maybe President Obama will change this, but George W. decided to build an anti-missile system next to Russia, and scuttled the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty to do it, so much for treaties and pacts. If, and when, that happens, Russia will counter with more missiles, and world tensions will rise yet again. It reminds me of the Cuban missile crisis when the two powers almost went ballistic. On top of this, it seems obvious to everyone that Iran wants to nuke Israel. Then there are the ongoing tests by the North Koreans to launch a long range missile that will eventually work. India and Pakistan cannot settle their differences, and rattle their weapons at each other, will it all start here? Could any one of these scenarios create a chain reaction rippling throughout the world? Of course, so we ignore it and focus on secondary issues to obfuscate the real danger.
Let's face the truth, it is inevitable that at some point the tension is going to be so high that even when a small conflagration starts it will not end until every major city in the world is wiped off the map. Or more likely, it will begin with an innocent mistake resulting from a simple: Oops! You folks in the New York–Washington DC area will have about thirty minutes warning time, and there will be no place to run or hide. The rest of us will have nothing better to do than wait for the fall out, and watch everyone around us slowly die, either of radiation or starvation. What do you tell your children? What will desperate people do without the rule of law?
It is far better to face a cold truth and stir things up, than die doing nothing. Use the power of the media to point out where information can be found, that alone will educate the uninformed. Start a movement in the world that picks up steam, if it panics people, they will get over it. Governments need to be moved, and their citizens can do that with your support. Despotic rulers or governments can be squeezed to comply; what is good for one can be good for all, when reason prevails. Once the nuclear weapons are gone, the secondary problems can be resolved much more quickly. Things are building in an ominous and decisive way, let's be up and doing while we still can.
